HERStory
Q&A With Jess
Q. How did your fitness professional journey begin?
A. My first year of college at Mississippi Valley, I was looking for a work study job. It was suggested that I teach workout classes in the rec. I had no idea what that was except step aerobics. Growing up, my dad built my self, my sister, and my mom "step" made out of wood and we would do step aerobics to a workout tape. Fast forward, I didn't do it. My second year of college at TAMU-Commerce, one of my electives was Aerobic Dance. I walked into class and Connie Kercher was so full of life and energy. After the first few weeks, I walked up to her and said "What do I need to do to have this job?" She took me under her wing, and I've been going since then.
Q. What's your biggest struggle with being a fitness business owner?
A. My biggest struggle is trying to keep people motivated. There's always a small core group, but fitness goes in waves. I would also say I struggle with wanting it for people more than they want it themselves.
Q. What made you start your new business ConquerHer?
A. I've played around with names for a while, but I wanted to create something women specifically could relate to. I've survived so many traumatic life situations and I know other women deal with the same issues, I guess I wanted something that was for ALL women.
Q. What's next for you?
A. I want to travel with my public speaking and workouts. I want to get inside of churches and schools and use my passion and my gifts to help make a difference. I also plan to finish some things I'm working on to expand/broaden my knowledge and career field.
